"Urban warfare" in rural Queensland
In late January Defence released their assessment of the environmental protection they put in place for Talisman Sabre 09. There’s no surprise that they gave themselves an A+ for sustainability.
Notably absent from their report is any assessment of the chemical hazards associated with munitions, nor any assessment of the absence of an emergency plan in case of nuclear accident. Likewise this ‘environmental’ report leaves no space for discussion of the ongoing issues of social impacts, including the dispossession of the indigenous owners of the land and the social risks of military personnel to the public, women in particular.
The Peace Convergence is a bi-annual protest camp established to show opposition to the destruction of the environment and the continued Australian involvement in the US war machine. It is held in Yeppoon. Rockhampton and Byfield adjoining the Shoalwater Bay Training Area on the beautiful Queensland central coast.
