Peace Convergence Update

Only a couple of days left until the Peace Convergence starts. Talisman Sabre troop numbers are building – 5000 US military were in Brisbane last weekend on R&R. (Thanks to those people who held vigils out at the port while the warships were in dock.) The numbers will build to 20,000 US troops by June 18.

Meanwhile, there has been a flurry of activity which has seen the establishment of the Shoalwater Embassy in Yeppoon, a new Peace Convergence website and an exciting programme of events and action for the week ahead – download the handbook on the website (www.peaceconvergence.com) to find out what is happening.

This Saturday is the Peace Parade kicking off at St Mary’s on Merivale Street, South Brisbane (meeting at 10.30am for a briefing with an 11.30am start for the parade). A theatrical affair! Followed by the Peace Gig in the evening at Souths Leagues Club, cnr Montague Rd & Jane St (doors open at 7pm; tickets $15 adult/$10 concession). A great line up on two stages as part of a Celebration of Hope!

For those planning to make the journey to Shoalwater Bay (folks from Melbourne have already left) there will be a convoy departure from Brisbane on Sunday 17 June. Gather 9am at Friends of the Earth, 294 Montague Rd, West End (near Souths Leagues Club & The Bicycle Revolution & Vulture St). Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy!

Please read the handbook for important information about accommodation, what to bring (you will need warm clothes!!), food, legal info, nonviolent guidelines, safety and what is happening. If in doubt about where to go when you arrive please head to the Embassy at Keppel Bay Plaza, James Street, (end of main street in Yeppoon away from beach) or if it is after 7pm contact the Embassy hotline 0401 314 805.

If you are traveling on Friday 22 June there will be people at the Yeppoon Town Hall (Normanby St) from midday with a Welcome Forum commencing at 7pm. A participant intro meeting will also be held from 10pm (factoring in people traveling all day and who may get in late). On Saturday, there will be a breakfast briefing at the Town Hall beginning at 6.30am.
