War and the preparation for war has a disproportionate and often unrecognised affect of women. Rape and sexual assault are known consequences of increased military presence and are problems both within the military and in the wider community.

As part of the week long Peace Convergence, a public forum will be held on the effects of war and militarization on women.

The Speakers:
Dr Zohl de Ishtar is an author and lecturer at the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Queensland. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 and is an internationally recognized expert on militarization and gender.

Fanai Castro is a young Chamorro activist from Guam, whose traditional homeland is part of Anderson US airforce base.

Rachel Darken is Queensland is spokesperson for the Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW).

Hundreds of peaceful protestors from the local community, the wider nation and internationally have joined the Peace Convergence, June 18-24.
