Food Not Bombs Action in Rockhampton

Food Not Bombs is setting up a street kitchen for the people of Rockhampton on Quay St. at 4pm on Wednesday June 20th, 2007.

The street kitchen is one of many actions that Food not Bombs has participated in this week.

The Food Not Bombs kitchen has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for the peace activists since the beginning of the convergence.

The street kitchen has been set up for the following reasons:

* To protest against war and imperialism - in this particular case the Shoalwater Bay War Games.

* To resist the inefficient/inequitable allocation of resources by the state. We live in a country where people go hungry and malnourished whilst more than $55 million dollars is spent daily on the military.

* To disprove the common myth of scarcity. Scarcity does not result from a shortage of resources but from processes of inequitable distribution.

What is Food Not Bombs?

Food Not Bombs is an internationalist movement serving free, vegan food to the hungry in protest against war, capitalism and environmental destruction. Food not Bombs collectives use primarily gleaned and donated foods to support community groups and radical actions. Most of what we use is food that would have otherwise been wasted.

Food not Bombs has chosen to act in solidarity with the Peace Convergence because we oppose nationalism, militarization and imperialism. Nationalism arbitrarily divides humanity through borders, policies and hegemony.

Militarisation takes money away from basic social services and into violent institutions. Imperialism deploys nationalism to conquer and control people and communities. Food Not Bombs works to create a direct democratic society based on community control of resources and peaceful coexistence.
